High Altitude Sickness(AMS)

High-altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), occurs when your body doesn't have enough time to adjust to the lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes (It can effect people at altitudes typically above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet)). Here are some key points about it:

Symptoms of High Altitude Sickness

Headache: The most common symptom.

Nausea and vomiting.

Fatigue: Feeling tired even when resting.

Loss of appetite.

Dizziness or lightheadedness.

Trouble sleeping.

Shortness of breath.

Malaise: A general feeling of being unwell.

Severe Forms of AMS

High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE): Fluid accumulation in the lungs, which can be life-threatening.

High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE): Swelling of the brain, which is also very dangerous.

Prevention of High Altitude Sickness

Gradual Ascent: Ascend slowly to allow your body to acclimatize.

Arrive Early: Spend at least 48 hours in Leh before heading to higher altitudes. This allows your body to adjust to the lower oxygen levels.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water.

Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: These can exacerbate symptoms.

Eat Lightly: Stick to light meals.

Medication: Consider preventive medication like Diamox (acetazolamide), but consult a doctor first.

Listen to Your Body: If you experience symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, or shortness of breath, take it seriously and rest.

Treatment of High Altitude Sickness

Immediate Descent: The most effective treatment is to descend to a lower altitude.

Supplemental Oxygen: Can help alleviate symptoms in emergencies.

Portable Hyperbaric Chamber: Can be used if descent is not possible.

Recognizing the symptoms early and taking appropriate measures can help prevent complications. If you experience severe symptoms, it's crucial to seek medical attention immediately.
