Sattal


A group of seven fresh water lakes, a stash of nature's bounty and loads of migratory birds and panoramic vistas make this wonderful place called Sattal. A paradise for nature buffs and bird watchers, Sattal has mystery to it that makes it all the more charming and photographer's paradise.

Situated in Kumaon Region at an elevation of 1370 m above the sea level, the area boasts of its cluster of seven interconnected lakes namely: Panna, Naldaymanti Tal, Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Bharat and Sukha Tal flanked by lush green cover of oaks and pines. With pleasant weather throughout the year, a visit to this destination away from the noise of cities is an experience not to be missed.

How to Reach Sattal

By Air: If you want to take flight then the nearest airport to Sattal is Pant Nagar Airport in Nainital, which is located 73 km away from it. The airport has regular flight connectivity with Delhi. From the airport, taxis on rent can be taken to reach Sattal.

By Train: The nearest railhead from Sattal is Kathgodam, located 36 km away. It is well- connected through various destinations like Agra, Delhi, and Lucknow through a number of trains. From station, regular connectivity is available to reach Sattal.

By Road: Sattal is well-connected with various important cities like Ramgarh and Nainital through road. There are excellent network of roads that also connect it from Delhi.

Best Time to Visit Sattal
Summer (April - June): Sattal's summer season stretches from April to June. The temperature varies from 15 degrees Celsius to as hot as 30 degrees Celsius. A lot of tourists come during the summer season. Especially during the month of May, when the children have their summer vacations, you can see a large number of families coming here.

Monsoon (July - August): The season of monsoon sees a reduction in tourists. Sattal receives rainfall in the month of July and August. You can still enjoy Sattal, as the frequent showers make it a whole lot more enjoyable.

Winter (September - March): The winter season of Sattal begins in November and stretches to late February. It is a great time for trekkers, as the snow-covered roads make up for a perfect adventure.

Places to See in Sattal
Butterfly Museum
It is a rich butterfly museum and an important tourist attraction of Sattal featuring more than 2,500 species of butterflies and 1100 species of insects. The museum was founded by Federic Smetacek.

Methodist Ashram
Methodist Ashram was founded by Stanley Jones in 1930. He was a great missionary and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. The Ashram is located at the entry point of Sattal banks. It is having great historical importance and features fine colonial architecture that makes it a popular tourist attraction of the town. In the premises of the ashram, you can also visit the very famous 'St. John's Church'.

Subhash Dhara
It is a must visit spot in Sattal. Subhash Dhara is a wonderful freshwater spring that comes from the dense forest of the town, towards the western region. This naturally emerged spring can mesmerize people with its utter clarity and beautiful surroundings.

Seven Lakes
As the name of the town justifies, Sattal is a fascinating cluster of seven interconnected lakes that are perched at an elevation of 1370 m above the sea level.
The sources of water for these lakes are underground springs and are named after the Hindu mythological figures. The names of these lakes are: Ram Tal, Lakshman Tal, Sita Tal, Nal Damyanti Tal, Panna Tal, Purna Tal and Sukha Tal.
